Experience Paradise at these 6 Sri Lankan Beaches

The island nation of Sri Lanka is renowned for its diverse landscapes and natural beauty. Like other islands, beaches are the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Sri Lanka.

Those flocking to South Asia for a tropical vacation certainly will not be disappointed in Sri Lanka’s sandy shores, swaying palm trees and crystalline waters. You can spend days with your toes in the sand, going for a refreshing swim or pampering yourself at a resort.

The hardest part is choosing which beach to visit first when stepping foot on the island. If you’re stuck on which Sri Lankan beach to visit first, check out this list to find the sliver of paradise right for you.

Mirissa Beach

This 2 km stretch of pristine sand on the southern coast of Sri Lanka has everything you need for a relaxing beach retreat. There’s plenty of space, laid-back vibes, and restaurants serving delicious seafood and drinks. What more could any beachgoer want?

If you’re up for some action, Mirissa Beach is a snorkelling paradise and has a gnarly swell that attracts surfers. Mirissa is also a popular gateway to some of Sri Lanka’s most exciting whale watching excursions. Witness blue whales, sperm whales and playful dolphins swimming near your vessel.

And when you’re just lounging on the beach, place a straw into a coconut for a soothing drink.

Weligama Beach

Weligama Beach is a serene hideaway for surfers of all skill levels due to fewer crowds and an absence of sharks. Many consider Weligama to be Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beach with its glistening white sands and fertile palm trees.

Surfers and fishing boats navigate deeper waters, but the shallow end attracts snorkellers with its gorgeous coral reef. You’ll likely see stilt fishing here, although the practice has dwindled in recent years.

Don’t forget to check out Taprobane Island, which houses an extravagant villa just offshore. If you choose to stay at the property on the rock island, it offers one of the most private beach experiences imaginable.

Arugam Bay

Nestled on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay is the country’s crown jewel for surfers. If you plan on visiting during surf season, be prepared to bump shoulders with some of the world’s best. International competitions are organized here, and there are rental shops everywhere if you want to test your skills.

For a little solitude, head over to Elephant Rock where you can sunbathe with a glorious view of the water. This is a mesmerising spot to watch the sunset so bring a meal and enjoy the show.

Arugam Bay is also a wonderful base for wildlife lovers with easy jaunts to the nearby Pottuvil Lagoon and Kumana National Park. Watch migratory birds, crocodiles, elephants, leopards, wild boars and more.

Dickwella Beach

Dickwella is a surreal destination for couples and families looking for a relaxing vacation. The beach is protected by reefs and sand bars making it one of Sri Lanka’s safest places to swim. Crystal clear waters and gorgeous reefs make it a fantastic spot for a snorkelling excursion.

Visitors staying in Dickwella can get a glimpse of the local culture both on the beach and in town. Canoes of local fishermen dot the shoreline, and you’ll find excellent Sri Lankan dishes such as vegetarian curries.

For those wanting a luxurious beach stay, Dickwella is home to lavish resorts where you can indulge yourself in soothing massages and refreshing drinks. Cap off your visit to Dickwella by taking a snapshot at its famous palm tree rope swing.

Bentota Beach

Located on Sri Lanka’s western coast between Colombo and Galle, Bentota Beach is an idyllic escape from city life. This unspoiled strip of white sand is lined with lavish resorts where you can enjoy spa life at its finest.

With its calm lagoon right next to the beach, Bentota is a fabulous place for water sports. Go water skiing, ride a jet ski, kayak or sail up the river to the nearby mangroves.

A Bentota River safari is an excellent chance to see all sorts of wildlife, including crocodiles, snakes, and lizards. You can also visit the Sea Turtles Protection Association for the liberating feeling of releasing sea turtles into the sea.

After an action-packed day, unwind in the fishing village and ease your hunger with some of Sri Lanka’s freshest seafood.

Unawatuna Beach

With its golden sands and turquoise waters, Unawatuna Beach sets the benchmark for a Sri Lanka beach vacation. Just a quick 15-minute drive from Galle, the picturesque village is a popular weekend getaway on Sri Lanka’s southern coast.

The beach is famous for its tranquil waters that accommodate lots of swimmers and snorkellers. With an abundance of marine life just offshore, Unawatuna is one of the top places for scuba diving tours in Sri Lanka. Turtle nesting is another popular activity that attracts many visitors to its shores.

You can easily reach the town from the beach where you’ll find lots of restaurants, bars and markets. And with the added treat of exciting nightlife, the fun continues well after sunset.
